What does Qasim mean in Arabic?

Qasim means one who distributes.

It originates from the Arabic rooti word ق-س-م (Q S M).

The name Qasim shares it’s root word Q S M with the Arabic word for division, ‘Taqseem’ (تقسيم). It means to distribute, divide, or to allot. In Islamic history, the given name was often ‘al-Qasim’, which means ‘the distributor’, as opposed to just ‘one who distributes’.. The indication is the individual is known to be fair and just in their distribution.

This name was held by two incredibily significant figures in Islam. One being Qasim ibn Muhammad – the prophet Muhammad’s and his wife Khadija’s first son, who passed away during childhood. Qasim ibn Hassan was the great-grandson of the prophet Muhammad – he was a significant figure in the battle of Karbala, during which fought and was martyred at the age of 13.
